Things I'd love to have, but don't

There are a ton of things to have in this world. Many are not for sale, but some are. These things are for sale and I wish I had them all. In time, perhaps.

1. Patagonia's Eco-Shell Jacket. I don't own a real coat. I'd like to have one that is built to last for the next twenty years and can be used for anything from a light jacket to a snow parka. This one seems to be the perfect outer shell. And Patagonia's main objective is to build clothing to last. I'm sure there are more jackets/coats out there, but this one is my current favorite.
2. Maxtor's One Touch 4 Mini Hard Drive. I've got hard drives all over the house, and all of them are being used for one thing or another. But I would dearly love to have one the same size as my laptop's 160gb internal drive that I could use on a regular basis for full disaster-recovery backups. This drive is one of very few that comes with the software to do just that, instead of just backing up files and directories.
3. Arduino is an open-source hardware controller. It could be the heart of nearly anything electronic, which is why it's so cool. I mostly just want to experiment and learn about building little electronic gadgets. So, you can go to the Maker Shed and get the Arduino Duemilanove, or any other kits or parts that go with it. If I every build anything interesting, I'll be sure to blog about it.
4. The Eternity II Puzzle. This looks like quite a challenge. I could hack and play with solving similar puzzles all year, but to have a crack at the prize, I'll need the actual pieces from this puzzle. It's only available in the U.S. from Toys R Us, and the Jackson store doesn't have any. Or it could be ordered from British toy stores or the manufacturer. The clue puzzles would be helpful, too.
5. Oh, books.

I have a dozen I'm currently reading. They get buried under my hundreds of magazines. And I have another several dozen waiting to be read. But I can't help myself! I still am drawn to books. Maybe after solving Eternity II, I can catch up on my reading.

  • I'd love to read anything highly recommended as great literature. I can't get enough of good writing. When an author can not only present ideas, but present them well with concise writing, appropriate analogies and metaphors, and without old cliches and wornout phrases, I'm taken in.
  • Douglas Adams Anything. He's hilarious, a brilliant comic with astute insights.
  • Kurt Vonnegut Anything but Breakfast of Champions, which was excellent and made me laugh, and Timequake, not as good, but still an OK book, and Man Without a Country, which was entertaining.
  • P.G. Wodehouse Anything, I haven't read any Wodehouse at all, so anything will be new and interesting.
  •  Five Minds for the Future, by Howard Gardner
  •  Educate me and make me think!
6. A Tesla Roadster. An electric car designed for people who actually want to drive and enjoy it.
7. A Decent flat-panel monitor. I would love to clear off some of the deskspace I'm wasting with my ten year old CRTs. Getting a nice big screen with a smaller footprint in a wider ratio would be great. But justifying the expense when I already have a monitor that works is tough, especially when it would mean the death of the functioning CRT. Nowadays, you can't resell them. You can't give them to Goodwill. Nobody wants them. So, I'm living with them til they die, if they ever die.

And things money can't buy:

  • Some basketball and some laughs with my little brother
  • More time with extended family
  • More time, Period
